Sound of Silence

By Taffy Tan

Deep breath in.

Deep breath out.

It seemed to Mike that all he could hear was his own heart beating and almost jumping out of his chest. It wasn’t fair but, he knew that if he tried to rebel, it would just cause him to end up in a even worse situation. His palms felt sweaty and he gripped the edges of his shirt. He looked down at the group and closed his eyes. Maybe if he pretended that nothing was there everything would actually go away. ‘Please,’ he prayed, ‘please tell them to leave me alone.’ However, they didn’t. Mike curled himself up into a ball in the corner as he grimaced from the pain. His brows furrowed and his lips pressed into a tight line. If only they would stop.

The throbbing of his body woke him up. He was lying on the cold hard ground. He could hear the raindrops outside. His forehead was burning and the soreness of his muscles kept him from moving. With a groan, he rolled back into a ball. He slammed his fist into the pavement and opened his mouth in the shape of an ‘o’. No sound came out. He closed his eyes for a few seconds and started to cry. No one stopped to help him. He had so much pressure in his chest that he wanted to let go. He wanted to find them and pay them back ten times the pain they gave him. He wanted to take a nice steaming bath and sleep forever in a soft bed. He wanted to find someone, someone he could trust and just cry and tell his story. But all he could do was to roll onto his back on the street and he closed his eyes again.
